As I mentioned earlier, the group accommodation is located in the heart of Rotterdam. So there are also lots of options nearby to make your stay even more fun, sociable or exciting. Many highlights are just around the corner from Rooms on Water, but sometimes it is also fun to look a little further afield. Here, I give you an overview of some of the activities and entertainment options. This list is far from complete, but is hopefully helpful in organising your stay.
The most important tip is: Book in time!
You are with a large group, so book that restaurant as soon as you have made your choice, but time slots for museums are also increasingly common.
Cruising on the Meuse, in the inner harbours or on the Schie
You will stay on a boat and sleep on the water, so we will start with boating tips:
– Water taxi: The water taxi has its boarding point directly behind the group accommodation. On the one hand, the ferry service, which goes every half hour via Willemskade to Hotel New York (on south); On the other hand, the taxi service, which you can book (also do so well in advance) via watertaxirotterdam.nl. A canal cruise is also possible, max 12 people can fit on a water taxi. I recommend a 45-minute cruise, which is enough to see a lot of Rotterdam.
– Sloops: Rent one or more sloops with or without skipper from Delfshaven and sail on the Schie. iKapitein offers great packages.
– Hottug: Right next to Rooms on Water is a unique concept: the Hottugs. These are like bathtubs filled with hot water and propelled by an electric motor, in which you can sail through the inner harbours by yourself and your friends while taking a bath (and possibly a drink).
– Rib Experience: Sail on a rib on the river and in the harbours. Quick sightseeing and an experience. The ribs also depart nearby.
– Spido: 75minute harbour tour on a large ship. Spido departs at regular times on all days.
– Waterbus: The waterbus has a regular schedule and departs from Willemsplein, next to Spido. a 10-minute walk from Rooms on Water. You can take the waterbus to, for example, Kinderdijk (any bicycles are allowed on board) or Dordrecht. A fascinating trip on the rivers and busy waterways.
Cycling in Rotterdam and surroundings
Rotterdam has good cycle paths, even for people who are not used to the city. Renting a bike, with or without a bike tour, is definitely recommended, as your radius of action will immediately increase.
– Bike tours and rent a bike: Inside Rotterdam offers very nice and surprising tours with an enthusiastic guide. Definitely worth checking out.
– Rent a bike: This is possible for the whole group at seeRotterdam.
Walking in Rotterdam
If you join a city tour or pick one yourself from the internet, you will always end up near Rooms on Water. That’s how centrally located the ship is in the city. There are lots of tours on the internet, sometimes downloadable with an app. Because the group accommodation is so close to a number of highlights, which you can easily walk past on your own (Market Hall, Cube Houses, Old Harbour (all three a few minutes’ walk), Het Depot, Central Station), I recommend doing a sponsored tour or one a bit further away.
– Walking tour: Inside Rotterdam offers a variety of walking tours, from rooftop tour to wild west tour or food tour. With enthusiastic guides.
Beach
Yes, you read it right. The North Sea beach is easily accessible from the group accommodation, even though the ship is located in the middle of the city. This is because Rooms on Water is close to metro stop Beurs. From this metro station you can use a day ticket to go to Hoek van Holland Strand.
The Kuip
You come to Rotterdam, the city with 3 professional football clubs. If you are a football player or football fan, a tour of De Kuip might be just the thing for you. Also available in English. On De Kuip’s website you can see the possibilities.
Going out with an activity
– Jeu de Boule and/or karaoke at Mooie Bouls in Rotterdam Noord. A cosy space has been created in an old shed, where you can play jeu de boule or karaoke in addition to enjoying a snack and drink. There are even board games.
– Escape room. There re several escape rooms in the neghbourhood. I think this one is the best. It’s also possible to enjoy a gin/ whiskey/ etc tasting.
Restaurants
Within walking distance of Rooms on Water you will find lots of restaurants. For example at the Wijnhaven, around the Oude Haven and in the Witte de Withstraat incl. side streets.
Bazar is a fine restaurant to go to with a group. Good food, pleasant atmosphere, fast service. The food is North African/Mediterranean and very tasty.
Gusto is an Italian restaurant on a side street of Witte de Withstraat. A restaurant with delicious pure flavours and pleasant service.
Both restaurants are nicely priced.
I also recommend looking for yourself, e.g. via google maps, because for me it is difficult to give restaurant tips. I don’t know my guests’ tastes and budgets.
Events in Rotterdam
Besides the many fun activities there are always in Rotterdam and its surroundings, there are many events organised in Rotterdam. For example: World Port Days, the Summer Carnival, a food truck festival, the Marie Marché Katendrecht or North Sea round town.
Here is the events calendar so you can see if anything is organised in the city during your stay.
